The Island Adventure Team works diligently to provide access to portions of the Golden Isles you might never see.

How about taking a voyage on a working shrimp boat – and having great seafood while you are on board! Visit nearby historical islands and plantations. Explore Cumberland, Sapelo and Little St. Simons Islands. Tour a couple of the Golden Isles largest employers such as the Port of Brunswick or the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center or take a day trip to the Okefenokee Swamp to see nature up close.

Croquet with new newcomer friends at the Historic Jekyll Island Club Resort! You don’t want to miss this unique event that has been a favorite past time on the lawn of the resort for years!

Event Details

  • When: Wednesday, March 10, 2021, 3:30pm – 5:30pm
  • Where: Front lawn of the Jekyll Island Club Resort – Please arrive no later than 3:15, and allow time to park
  • Cost: $45 per person (Includes private instructor, mallets, and rental of courts)

Let’s picnic overlooking the Marshes of Glynn before we have a fun Kayaking adventure with your Newcomers! This trip is for all skill levels! Even the “never been kayaking” newcomers!!

Learn the basic skills of sea kayaking while exploring the scenic “Marshes of Glynn”.  Launching from a private dock, this trip is an easy and informative way to discover why kayaking is one of the fastest growing sports today!

Event Details

  • When: Saturday, March 13th, 2021, 11:30am – 2:30pm
  • Picnic Lunch – 11:30-12:30 (You do not have to join the picnic to sign up for Kayaking) Note: Bring your own picnic and meet at the Marshes of Glynn Park – located to the left as you enter Hwy 17 leaving the causeway from SSI.  Picnic tables are provided.  NO FOOD or DRINK provided.
  • Kayaking – Begins at 12:45-2:30 at 1200 Glynn Ave/Hwy 17 (next to Marshside Grill) Just a little ways from your picnic location.
  • Cost: $38 per person – Price includes: Single or Tandem Kayak, guide. Wear clothing and shoes that can get wet! (Even though not likely).  Sunglasses, Sunscreen,  hat and a sense of humor!!

Beach Walk – March 14show details + $25.00 (USD)  

Start your adventure at the Mosaic Museum for a guided tour with an expert at the facility. Then take a private tram ride to the Wharf restaurant for lunch with a magical river marsh view!

After lunch, continue your tram ride with the local expert to include rarely seen buildings on the grounds, including the interior of Faith Chapel, with its Tiffany and Armstrong windows, and Hollybourne Cottage, currently being restored, with a lot of work being done by local residents. The tram is an open aired vehicle.  Dress appropriately for rain or shine!

Join your fellow Newcomers for fun and fellowship!  With the COVID concerns it has been hard on all to gather for fun!  We are hoping this will be an opportunity to meet and greet in a fun outside environment!

Let’s play KICKBALL!! And if you do not want to play, we will have Pom-Pom’s for the CHEERLEADERS!! We will also be served hotdogs and hamburgers from the grill by our local grill master, Jerry, who has worked with Newcomers on many occasions!

Feel free to bring your own chairs for more social distancing, and if you want additional food or drink, can bring your own as well!

Kickball, Cheerleading & Cook-out – March 20show details + $25.00 (USD)  

Join the experts and explore little known nooks and crannies of our island’s most treasured and historic structures.

Tour begins at the World War II museum with the site manager.  Climb the Crow’s Nest observation if you dare!  Learn about the 2nd floor vintage apartment.  Also, plenty of time to explore the rest of the museum on your own.

Next, head over to ECHO at the historic King and Prince for a delicious lunch.  Imagine the Radar Training that took place at this hotel/restaurant location during the war.

After lunch, you will finish the day with an intriguing visit to the Lighthouse and Keeper’s Dwelling.  Learn about the oil house, and the careful maintenance of the lighthouse.  Have a look into a secret closet with a hidden amazing view.  Then at 3:30 you will experience “Lens Love” with members of the coast guard auxiliary.  If you chose to climb with them to enter the lens room itself, you will experience a rarely offered treat.  You will also have time to wander the museum on your own.

WWII, Echo, Lighthouse Tour – March 25show details + $25.00 (USD)  

Visitors enjoy the opportunity to learn about the Okefenokee on tour aboard a 24ft Carolina Skiff. These are flat bottomed boats with ample seating and canopies overhead.

You will travel along the historic Suwannee Canal through a tangled forest of bay, cypress, pine and shrubs, then out into the open expanse of Chesser Prairie. You may encounter egrets, herons, ibis, sandhill cranes, red-shouldered hawks, and American alligators, as well as otters in the winter and wood stocks in the summer and fall. The swamp scenery is always spectacular!

  • Where: 4159 Suwannee Canal Rd., Folkston, GA 31537 / 912-496-7156 / www.okefenokeeadventures.com / PLEASE NOTE: There is a $5 per vehicle – cash only – refuge entry fee (fee is waived if you have a senior park pass, federal lands pass, duck stamp or any other valid pass).
  • More specific information will be sent out to all that register about one week prior to event
  • Cost: $70 per person, which includes dinner, swamp cruise, tax, and tips.
  • Note: Transportation to and from Folkston is not included, and carpooling is suggested. The drive is approximately 1 ½ hours.  Plan on arriving no later than 4:45pm, the low country boil will be first, then the cruise, during sunset.
  • Number of skiff boats will be determined once all have registered.  Participants will be spread out per CDC guidelines.

Okefenokee Swamp Sunset Cruise & Low Country Boil – March 28show details + $70.00 (USD)  

Come and enjoy a day trip to Little St Simons with a professional naturalist guide. You will get a perspective of the many island habitats, a greater understanding of the mission and vision of their conservation management. Once you arrive on the island, you will visit the Barn Conference Center for a brief island introduction and access to restrooms. You will not be able to visit the main Hunting Lodge.

Your tour, with the guide, will be on a truck outfitted with comfortable benches. There will also be stops during the tour to view the flora, fauna and wildlife.  Lunch will be served. After lunch there is time to enjoy the shorebirds at the beach, beach-comb, or just sit and relax. Meet at Hampton marina at 10:15am for departure.  Return from Little St Simons will be departing at 4pm

  • Bring: Hat (for sun/bugs), rain gear (if weather dictates), comfortable shoes you do not mind getting wet, camera/binoculars, lightweight long sleeves/pants to ward off insects
  • Provided: a memorable educational adventure, bug spray/sunscreen, picnic lunch and drinking water
  • Safety: Due to COVID-19, the LSSI team is working diligently to keep everyone safe. They require everyone to wear a mask when traveling on the ferry, when on naturalist trucks, or when in close proximity with other people.
