Okefenokee Swamp Park has experienced 2 years’ of drought and has curtailed float trips since 2010. That’s all over now, and we have scheduled a Newcomers Adventure for Wednesday, November 7th. The cost is $26.50 per person. We encourage you to carpool to the park with friends, and we will provide the following:
- 90-minute float trip on 15-passenger boats
- Lunch following the trip with burgers, beans, salad, peach cobbler, tea and lemonade
- You may want to bring bug spray
- A hat would be a good idea, and a light long-sleeved shirt
You can learn more about this National Park at www.fws.gov/okefenokee/ BUT do not use the directions provided there as we are not using any of the 5 entrances listed! We will use the entrance and directions at www.okefenokeeadventures.com which are also detailed below. You should allow 90 minutes for the car trip, and plan to be there by 9:45 a.m. There is a $5 entrance fee per car unless you have a National Parks Landpass. These are available to Seniors (age 62) for $10 and can be obtained at Fort Frederica National Park on Saint Simons. They do not expire, and will admit up to 4 people at most National Parks.
Directions: Follow Rt. 17 over the Sidney Lanier Bridge, pass under I-95 and continue 14 miles into White Oak. Turn RIGHT onto 252 West/Burnt Foot Road, and follow it for 23 miles into Folkston. Turn LEFT onto 2nd Street, then a quick RIGHT onto Main Street. At the second traffic light, turn LEFT onto 121 South/Okefenokee Parkway and go 7 miles. Watch for the large wooden sign that says “Okefenokee Wildlife Refuge” and turn RIGHT. Go 4 miles to parking for Okefenokee Adventures. Present National Parks Passport, or pay $5 per car to park (see above). Walk to the boat landing. Their phone # is 912-496-7156; please call if you have difficulty finding your way!
