Gardening Club – Fruit Trees – July Event

Gardening Club – Fruit Trees – July Event

@ the Faulkner’s house.

In the beginning of the fruit harvest season, Mr. & Mrs. Faulkner are inviting the members of our garden club to visit their fruit trees plantation in the beautiful, secluded Frederica area. Thank you, M. & B. Faulkner.  Max and Bonnie have beautified their property with fruit trees. In the recent years they planted a variety of exotic and special native fruit trees around their house. Our garden club members can visit their “garden of Eden” in July.

The meeting here last year, was a huge success with 40+ attendees; therefore, in July we schedule 2 sessions and 10 days apart.
The Faulkner’s have planted a wide variety of different fruit trees. Many trees are sub-tropical and exotic. Look for 6 or more different species of fig trees; figs to eat raw, figs to preserve, other figs to cook: originating in France, Greece or other Mediterranean countries. A bit further you see pomegranates with their beautiful large orange blossoms and apple-size fruits, and a Middle Eastern persimmon tree. Around the house you recognize the young and older citrus trees: lime, key lime, navel oranges, mandarins, and more. Very exclusive are the guava trees: pineapple guava and strawberry guava: their fruits are sweet, making the best jelly you ever tasted. Between the fruit trees and in the edges look for herbs and vegetables.

Max is truly knowledgeable and will explain everything there is to know about their trees. At the end of the tour, you can enjoy some refreshments and taste some delicatesse samples of the products of this special fruit tree garden.

Please sign up via this event for this session – July 24 @ 10am. See you there.

Vegetable Canning Facility Visit – Hands On Event

Vegetables canning. Hands-on experience at this tin-canning facility.

Date yet to be determined (probably July) – Small Fee will be charged for number of cans utilized by each person

The tin-canning operation is part of the Ag-department of the Appling County High School in Baxley, Ga., located on Hwy. 341, 65 Miles west from Brunswick.
The canning plant is an up-to-date facility, one of the best in the state, operated by the Ag-teachers and students.

This is a hands-on activity: prepare your own recipe, bring your vegetables. You will clean or peel your vegetables onsite in stainless sinks and prepare for tin-canning. You will receive your vegetables in 20 oz. tin cans. Back home, you have an inventory of tasty self-canned vegetables for you, your family and your friends for the coming months and years! (And Holidays).
The most common canned vegetables are tomatoes (sauce, soup, halves, juice, salsa) and green beans.
Beside the vegetable canning operation, you can cream corn for the freezer at this facility. Bring your corn, freezer bags and cool storage.

The canning facility is open to the public only 3 weeks in June and reservation is required. Therefore, I need to know how many members are willing to travel to Baxley. We hope to find up to 12 interested members and perhaps we can carpool.
More info about tin-canning vegetables:

After the hands-on canning experience, we can visit the nearby County Farm Nursery, the largest plant, shrub, and flower nursery in South Georgia.
Please confirm your interest by returning email ASAP and no later than June 10.
This activity is subject to cancellation.
